Hōkūleʻa and Hikianalia Reach Pago Pago

On the morning of August 21, 2014, Hōkūleʻa and Hikianalia arrived in Pago Pago, American Samoa, the last port of this leg in the Mālama Honua Worldwide Voyage sponsored by Hawaiian Airlines. During the 9-day journey from Aitutaki, Cook Islands, the crews were challenged with varying weather conditions such as light winds and passing squalls. Fortunately, the crews were also blessed with several catches of mahimahi. According to master navigator and Hōkūleʻa captain Chadd Onohi Paishon, Hōkūleʻa and HIkianalia sailed very well with one another throughout the duration of this leg.

Prior to arriving in Pago Pago, the canoes spent time offshore of the nearby island of Manuʻa on Wednesday afternoon. The local community was able to welcome the crewmembers and tour Hōkūleʻa and Hikianalia.

The current crewmembers will continue to conduct educational and community outreach while in Pago Pago. The next set of crewmembers are expected to arrive on August 25 to prepare for the next leg.
