Mālama Honua means to care for our Island Earth, but it is really so much more than that. Mālama Honua is a state-of-being. It is mindfulness that in every action we take, every choice afforded to us, we can choose a path that is compassionate to both our environment and to one other. Mālama Honua is the foundational value that is driving the Worldwide Voyage and it is allowing us to connect with communities and cultures across the globe.
 
When Master Navigator Nainoa Thompson talks with schools and organizations about the Worldwide Voyage, he compares the people, places and ideas that are connected through the voyage to flowers of a Hawaiian lei. As people like you engage in the voyage, this “lei of hope” begins encircling our Island Earth.
