Hōkūleʻa Update | July 21, 2015

Aloha kakahiaka, this is Lehua Kamalu. We are here on the Worldwide Voyage between Darwin and Bali. There are thirteen of us onboard and this current group of crewmembers is awesome. As we continue to distance ourselves from Darwin we are starting to get a little bit of wind – it was pretty flat for the whole first day. The conditions departing Darwin were very interesting: the water was very green and murky and there seemed to be a lot of algae and other life including fish that were jumping out of the water.

Now we are into clearer water and there is some wind that is coming from behind us so we are on a downwind tack. We’re doing about five and half knots. It’s kind of beautiful. We had a clear sky last night all the stars were out, with only a few clouds. This is the first half of the trip where we are headed due west to a place called Ashmore Reef. Its kind of littered with coral shoals and reefs in this area between Australia and Indonesia. After that we head another 500 miles or so into Bali.
