Many children have seen the Disney film, Moana, about the amazing tradition of the voyaging canoes of Polynesia. We have a real life story of how our ancient voyaging tradition came to life in Hōkūleʻa and the great accomplishment of her worldwide journey.
In the movie, Moana, the people had lost their sailing tradition. That is very much what happened throughout the Pacific, until some Hawaiians, determined to relearn the ancient arts of sailing and wayfinding, built the double-hulled canoe, Hōkūleʻa and took to the ocean again in 1975. Now, Hōkūleʻa has gone far beyond the Pacific Ocean and sailed completely around the world crossing many seas, visiting many lands and befriending many peoples.
The Sail On Moana Song Kit can be used virtually everywhere by schools, community groups, home study, families and others. It is designed to help teachers share with their students not only values and voyaging traditions out of the past, but through this unusual cultural connection, to instill among our children a sense of responsibility in caring for the Earth for the future.
Award winning composers Leon & Malia — the best loved kids music team from Hawaii — designed their songs to be informational, entertaining and uplifting. The Songs and Content for the informative and interactive Teacher Notes meet national K-6 educational benchmarks and performance standards.
