April 27: Hokule’a Departs for Kawaihae at 10:30am
The Hōkūle‘a crew departed from the Marine Education Training Center at 10:30am today. Hōkūle‘a will be sailing to Kawaihae to begin the first leg of the Statewide Sail.

His Holiness the Dalai Lama conducts a blessing of the earth and a consecration of Hōkūle’a and her Worldwide Voyage. Amid traditional Hawaiian chants and ceremonies at an ancient and sacred site, the occasion is captured with powerful symbolism and personal moments.

…Mahalo for the safe journey of the crew of Hokule‘a and her two support vessels. On the evening of April 16 the three vessels departed for the island of Hawai‘i. After crossing the Kaiwi Channel we turned around when one support boat had engine difficulties. Hokule‘a and her two support boats made it safely back to the Marine Education and Training Center on Tuesday morning, April 17, where she will stay until she departs for Kawaihae on April 27.

… Mahalo to Brad Lau, Melora Purell and the Kohala Watershed Partnership http://kohalawatershed.org team who welcomed our crews to the Koai‘a Corridor Native Plant Sanctuary & Restoration Project. We are grateful for the opportunity to see the awesome work the KWP team and the community continue to do to malama the watersheds of the Kohala Mountain. Our crew enjoyed removing invasive lantana, planting native ‘a‘ali‘i, and walking through the sanctuary, reminding us of the beauty of the forest that once blanketed the slopes of the mountain.

April 20: PVS Volunteers Help Kohala Watershed
Kohala, Hawaiʻi
Polynesian Voyaging Society crew members volunteered with the Kohala Watershed Parnership. We removed lantana and planted aʻaliʻi. We saw some endangered native plants and learned a lot about the incredible work they are doing to restore their watershed. For more information go to KohalaWatershed.org
April 13: Hōkūleʻa Embarking on Statewide Sail
Honolulu, Hawaiʻi – Marine Education & Training Center – Sand Island
Hōkūle’a crew members prepared and departed from Sand Island on Friday and sailed to the sacred shores of Hakipu’u and Kualoa where Hokule’a was first launched 37 years ago. Hōkūleʻa will be at Kualoa Beach Park for the City’s Canoe Festival on Saturday. There will be on-board tours of Hōkūleʻa and other sailing canoes, activities and games, and food booths to support Hawaiian charter schools. The event is free. 10am-3pm.
From Kualoa, Hōkūleʻa will embark on the Statewide sail from April 16 through August 7. The Statewide sail is the Hawaiʻi-based start to the World Wide Voyage. More information on the Statewide sail, including stops, will be posted through this website blog.
