Plastics have greatly improved our standard of living, however they now make up the majority of debris in ocean surface waters and pose a large threat to marine ecosystems. Throughout the WWV plastic debris will be collected and preserved to better understand what microorganisms are colonizing the plastic fragments and whether or not these organisms have the potential to naturally degrade the plastic.
