4 years ago, Hikianalia was launched for sea trials and embarked on her first deep-ocean crossing. Built in Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland), Aotearoa by Salthouse Boatbuilders, our modern voyaging canoe Hikianalia began testing her engines and stretching her sails on September 15, 2012, prior to her voyage from Tāmaki to Tahiti on October 9, 2012.
After traveling the Pacific with Hōkūleʻa during the first two years of the Worldwide Voyage, Hikianalia returned home to continue crew training and education outreach in Hawaiʻi last year. She embarked on a statewide sail to connect with dozens of communities and thousands of supporters, a voyage to Papahānaumokuākea, many many crew training sails, and spent some time in dry dock receiving TLC from the many hands and hearts of our volunteers. Most recently, she proudly welcomed leadership from the Pacific and all of Island Earth at the opening of the World Conservation Congress.
