Hikianalia Update | Sept 22-23, 2018: Aloha Sausalito

Sept 23, 2018 – Captain Mark Ellis with us from beautiful Half Moon Bay. The busy crew recently sailed from Sausalito where they visited students and staff at The New Village School. Crewmembers also hosted a bunch of tours in port aboard the Polynesian voyaging canoe Hikianalia.

Aloha kākou and hauʻoli māuiili o ka hāʻulelau (autumnal equinox)!

The crew had a busy day today, including a quick sail and public tours. We rose early in the morning fog, readied the waʻa, and dropped our tethers to the Matthew Turner.

Hikianalia did not have to be moved far, only to a dock a short ways away at the Spaulding Marine Center where our public tours would be held. The move was short but tight in a few spots–the crew did well steering through the crowded marina to our new dock, where we tied off and prepared for the day of tours.

Although a bit chilly, the sky was clear, providing us with perfect weather for sharing Hikianalia with Sausalito. From 10 a.m. on we had a steady stream of excited visitors, filling the canoe with lively dialogues. So many family, friends, and even strangers bought us meaʻai (food!), much of which was chosen so thoughtfully, such as manapua and musubi–treats we were not expecting to encounter this far away from home–but kindness has a way of surprising you in the most wonderful ways.

Hikianalia community Tours, Sausalito

We estimate that we welcomed at least five hundred guests aboard during visiting hours, with so many residents of Sausalito and beyond hoping for us to return again in the future. Many of the students and staff from the New Village School came to tour Hikianalia, and it was wonderful to see their support extend even outside of class. Though short, our time in Sausalito has connected and reconnected us with members of our global ʻohana of support, uniting us in our love for the canoes and our efforts to Mālama Honua.

Mahalo and Aloha from Hikianalia and Crew!
