Continuing on her Mahalo Hawaiʻi, Sail, Hōkūleʻa took to the water again today to return to Ko Olina Resort. Amidst fair weather and steady tradewinds, Polynesian Voyaging Society crewmembers welcomed aboard a group of Kamaile Academy school students and their teachers. The students are part of a science team known as Na Hoʻokele (the navigators) and were invited by master navigator Nainoa Thompson to experience firsthand what it’s like to sail aboard Hōkūleʻa.
“We made a promise to our children that the [Mālama Honua] voyage would influence goodness primarily in the arena of education,” said Nainoa Thompson, whose team has planned to visit as many as 70 communities as part of the Mahalo Hawaiʻi, Sail. “We are here at Ko Olina to catch up with the children of Nanakuli, Ewa, Waipahu and Kapolei – we are here to keep our promise to our children one port, one school and one child at a time,” said Thompson.
The legendary voyaging canoe will remain docked in West O’ahu until Feb 3 hosting school groups and daily public dockside canoe tours at the Ko Olina Marina.
