Much of the Mahalo Hawaiʻi, Sail has been about succession – elevating talented crewmembers to leadership roles so that they can continue to perpetuate Polynesian voyaging practices for generations to come.
Today’s update comes to us from Worldwide Voyage crewmember Lohiao Paoa who was given the kuleana of captain for the Hōkūleʻa’s coastal sail along the southeast shoreline of Molokai.
Lohiao has been involved in PVS through family and community from a young age and he first sailed on Hōkūleʻa at the age of 15. Lohiao, along with crewmember Mahinahou Ross, is now teaching voyaging classes at Molokai – University of Hawaii Maui College and Molokai High School.
Today’s outing was a chance-of-a-lifetime opportunity for students to leave the classroom and sail aboard Hawaiʻi’s legendary canoe.
