Training and Marine Science!

This past weekend, the Kamaile Future Navigators participated in a survival training and marine science weekend in Maunalua Bay. The Kamaile students have been training with PVS for the past 2 years and helping to restore Hōkūleʻa and E Ala. They are learning all about voyaging, navigation and caring for their island community.

“This morning, we departed at 10:30am with a count of 6 students and one adult. Isaiah Pule, Dyaun Freitas, Natty Bailey, Sagelynn Carnate Gallarde, William Moe, and Phillip Niederschmit. We then drove all the way to Hawaii Kai to meet Jenna Ishii. We then drove to Makapu’u Beach to swim, tread water, collect plankton, and have fun. We then departed to Nainoa’s hale in the back of Niu valley. We took the most amazing hike ever up the valley. Jenna led the way for about 30 mins. After that, we students had to navigate our way back! It was easy we followed the river bank down. It was a hike that won’t be forgotten. We should thank Natty Bailey for helping us get our way back!”

Volunteer scientists from Kahi Kai and Kai Makana Foundation came to the beach for a marine science and paddling experience to collect plankton and test water quality, salinity and turbidity at different parts of the bay. When the students returned to land, they learned how to observe tiny organisms under a microscope called the  “cell scope”.

As a teacher, I don’t know if there’s any better feeling in the world than to see students excited about learning, and that’s exactly what you made happen this weekend. A huge part of that was the science that you brought to life through the conversations, sampling, and that awesome microscope. More important than the plankton, though, were you folks– “the scientists.” You clearly brought your passion to those students, and I truly think you imparted some of that very same passion in each of them. ”
