Maryknoll School Commits to Care for the Earth with Pwo Navigator Nainoa Thompson

Maryknoll School held a tree planting ceremony today to mark a school-wide commitment to Mālama Honua (“care for the planet”) along with Pwo Navigator Nainoa Thompson. Thompson, who was honored by Maryknoll as the 2018 Kekumano Honoree for his service and leadership in our global community, was on-hand to witness the students’ reading of their statement of commitment to sustainability and participate in the planting of a tulipwood tree on campus. The ceremony commemorated Maryknoll’s 90th anniversary year and the 20th anniversary of the Kekumano Award, which recognizes leaders for their selfless contributions to society.

The day started with ʻoli (chanting) by Maryknoll High School students followed by remarks by Perry Martin, Maryknoll School President, and Nainoa Thompson. Student body presidents then read statement of commitment and followed up with the tree planting at corner of Wilder St. and Alexander.
