Caring for our island communities, lands and waters through partnerships and action.

Green Infrastructure

The Promise to PaeʻĀina Island Home team launched a series of seminars on/around the topic of “Green Infrastructure” and itʻs relevance for Hawaiʻi. This undertaking was a result of many months of ongoing cross-sector discussions that reflect the Island Home Commitment and one of itʻs target goals:

Caring for our island communities, lands and waters through partnerships and action by: Improving watershed health in the wao kanaka (lower watershed) through coordinated action for sustainable and resilient communities.

Featuring speakers who are expert practitioners in their current fields, this new innovative seminar series focuses on the positive impacts of Green Infrastructure (GI) on watershed health, especially in relation to populated areas. Guest speakers discussed the possibilities, advantages, and challenges of implementing GI in Hawaiʻi. Topics addressed how such best management practices improve water quality, storm water drainage, resilience to extreme weather, while reducing erosion of land and coastal areas. The diverse backgrounds of the invited speakers will provide opportunities for interdisciplinary interactions among academic and professional communities in conservation, economy, architecture, engineering, oceanography, urban planning, Hawaiian studies, sustainability and more.
