Nearly 40 years ago, the founders of the Polynesian Voyaging Society dreamed of rebuilding a double-hulled canoe similar to those of our ancestors. And on March 8th, 1975 Hōkūleʻa was born. Birthed in the waters of Hakipuʻu.

I am filled with awe of dazzling atolls, the vast expanse of deep blue, the navigator silhouette against the heavens, the spirit of dance and hā, strength, perseverance, courage, bumps, bruises, blood and sweat, muscles aching, hearts yearning.

Each of us was born for this generation and time, to step up, imagine, innovate, and hold to our visions in all kinds of weather.
