Ka‘iwakīloumoku is proud to showcase this new, dynamic two-part documentary featuring never before seen footage of traditional, communal canoe construction, and Pacific voyaging and navigation as practiced today on the remote island of Taumako, a Polynesian outlier in the Solomon Islands.
Anthropologist, sailor, and filmmaker, Dr. Marianne “Mimi” George will present this rare video-graphic time capsule of a Polynesian society that is thriving in isolation, virtually unchanged for well over a thousand years. With Hawai‘i’s hosting of some 28 Oceanic nations for the Festival of Pacific Arts and Culture in June, and in anticipation of the 2021 Moananuiākea Voyage that will strive to inspire climate change solutions through indigenous knowledge and cutural wisdom, we invite students, educators, families and communities to come enjoy this enriching evening of learning.
