Update | October 9, 2014

Aloha, this is Kaʻiulani Murphy from the deck of Hōkūleʻa sitting in Pago Pago Harbor, Tutuila Island, American Samoa. This an update of our crew who arrived here on Monday night. So we’ve been here for a few days. Our first plan for departure was for tomorrow, Friday. But due to the weather conditions, rain and really light winds, we’re actually putting our departure off until maybe Monday when it looks like the weather is going to be a little better for us. We’ll have better wind and be able to sail on the course that we want. From here, we go to Vavaʻu in Tonga. It’s about 320 miles away. When we arrived here, we actually got to meet the National Marine Sanctuary team. American Samoa has the largest National Marine Sanctuary for all of America. something they are very proud of. They started with one bay – Fagatele Bay – and expanded to include thousands of miles of marine protected areas. That’s been really awesome, and they’ve been taking care of us. So we’ve been making sure the canoes are ready to go. The crew is prepared, making sure we have everything onboard, checking weather daily to make sure we’ll be leaving at the best time.
