Hōkūleʻa Team Nominated for Nat Geo’s Adventurers of the Year

ng_logo_tm_whitebackground_cmykNative Hawaiians Nainoa Thompson and Kalepa Baybayan and the rest of the Hōkūleʻa Team have been honored as nominees for 2017 National Geographic Adventurers of the Year. The Adventurers of the Year are individuals whose extraordinary achievements in exploration, adventure sports, conservation or humanitarianism have distinguished them in the past year.

Crewmembers, comprised of celestial wayfinders, are on a four-year Worldwide Voyage aboard the famed voyaging canoe Hōkūleʻa. In the process, they are igniting a cultural restoration in Hawaiʻi and teaching a new generation of adventurers how to navigate by the stars. Nainoa Thompson, Pwo navigator and president of the Polynesian Voyaging Society, was a 2016 recipient of the National Geographic Society’s most prestigious award, the Hubbard medal.
