2016 Hikianalia: Neighboring Islands of Hawaiʻi

The Polynesian Voyaging Society’s traditional voyaging canoe Hikianalia is visiting with local communities throughout the Hawaiian archipelago during the first half of the year. Hikianalia’s statewide sail began on the North Shore of Oʻahu in the fall of 2015, and today she continues the journey around the Hawaiian Islands. Maui was her first stop in January of 2016, with visits to Molokai and the Big Island in February and March. Hikianalia will be bringing the values of Mālama Honua—caring for our Island Earth–to each of our island communities while Hōkūle‘a continues from the African continent to South America. The crew will also be in search of stories of hope throughout the Hawaiian Islands that are making a positive change for Hawaii’s future, inspired by Hōkūle‘a’s legacy.

During her time on Neighboring Islands, Hikianalia crew offers canoe tours to the community and also conducts educational opportunities for students and teachers alike, as well as training for future crewmembers on the Worldwide Voyage. To find out more about Hikianalia including opportunities to meet up with crewmembers and participate in outreach activities visit Hokulea.com/Hikianalia.
