For myself, it has been a great pleasure meeting old friends as we sailed across the central Pacific and to introduce new crew members to the many island communities we visited.
As Hōkūleʻa and Hikianalia begin the next leg of the Mālama Honua Worldwide Voyage from Tahiti to Samoa, we look back at the time spent in Fare Hape, a deeply sacred place that the crew was fortunate to visit.
Two weeks after their June 22nd arrival in Tahiti, Hōkūleʻa and Hikianalia left the city of Papeete and sailed to the village of Tautira. Not just another stop along the way, but rather a homecoming.
During their time in Tahiti, crewmembers attend Heiva, a two-week long Tahitian dance competition, where they experienced song, dance, and storytelling.
