WWV Mālama Hawai‘i Report: planting ‘aki‘aki at a site in Waihe‘e, Maui

Crew learning history about area

Today our Maui crew members enjoyed a beautiful day at the Waihe’e Coastal Dunes & Wetlands Refuge. We joined a regular volunteer work day (every Friday) with the Hawaiian Islands Land Trust (HILT) and helped to clear invasive pests and plant ‘aki’aki in their place. ‘Aki’aki (Sporobolus virginicus) is a coarse grass that grows in the sand. We also had the opportunity to see how the ‘aki’aki is propagated and help in the process. Mahalo to Scott Fisher and the volunteers with HILT for an amazing day of learning for our crew and sharing the stories of that ‘āina.
