May 30: Kaho‘olawe

Arriving at Honokanai‘a on the island of Kaho‘olawe , Hōkūle‘a crew members watched the strong offshore winds and even stronger gusts before anchoring the canoe.

Honokanai‘a is on the west side of Kaho‘olawe, adjacent to the channel known as Kealaikahiki, “The Way to Tahiti.” A star compass dedicated to Mau Piailug is located north of Honokanai‘a (Photo by Karen Holman, 2010):

The Protect Kaho`olawe `Ohana (PKO) is a grassroots organization dedicated to the island of Kaho‘olawe and the prinicples of Aloha `Aina throughout Hawai`i nei.

The Kahoʻolawe Island Reserve Commission (KIRC) manages the Kahoʻolawe Island Reserve.

Mālama Kaho‘olawe, developed by the Pacific American Foundation, is a curriculum unit for Grade 8, focusing on the island of Kaho‘olawe as a training site for ancient navigators.

May 27 Sailing in the ‘Alenuihāhā Channel

Continuing sea trials and crew training for the World Wide Voyage, Hōkūle‘a sailed from Lahaina into strong winds in  the ‘Alenuihāhā channel between Maui and Hawai‘i to prepare for possible similar conditions of strong winds and opposing surface currents creating dangerous conditions in the southern Indian Ocean along the east coast of South Africa.

May 10: At China Walls, Honoring Albert Falco …

Members of PVS met yesterday at China Walls to honor Albert Falco, a French scuba diving veteran and champion of ocean conservation, who passed away in Marseille on Saturday, April 21, at 84. Falco was was one of the longest-serving diving companions of ocean pioneer Jacques Cousteau and was on the Ocean Advisory Board of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, a non-profit ocean conservation organization.

Bob tell how the only time as a child he did not have to eat at the dinner table was when there was a Jaques Cousteau special on TV; in keeping with that practice, he allows that privilege to his children today:

May 8: In Honor of Albert Falco

“Albert Falco, Bébert, my “older brother” just left us for the Big Blue. His kindness, dedication & commitment will continue to inspire us to never stop taking care of our life support system…the ocean…until we join him in the Big Blue.” – Jean-Michel Cousteau

On Wednesday, May 9, the Polynesian Voyaging Society will join with other ocean-minded groups and individuals in honoring someone of like mind and heart: Albert Falco, Jacques Cousteau’s closest colleague, fellow diver and ocean advocate.  Albert Falco recently passed away, and Jean-Michel Cousteau has asked people around the world to pay tribute on May 9 at 10 am, wherever they are, to remember Albert Falco and his work for the oceans with a moment of silence. April 17: After a Blessing, Hōkūle‘a Departs

On Monday, April 16, Hōkūle‘a received a blessing for her upcoming World Wide Voyage from the Dalai Lama, who was visiting Hawai‘i.

At 6 pm on Monday, Hōkūle’a left Hakipu’u-Kualoa for Kauna‘oa Bay, on the west coast of Kohala, on the Big Island of Hawai‘i. This is the first stop in her Statewide Sail, scheduled for April 16 to August 7. After Kauna‘oa, Hōkūleʻa will head for Kawaihae, north of Kauna‘oa, for a week-long stay.
