Hōkūleʻa Nav Report | Feb 23, 2017: Haunani’s Evening Update

Leg 28 apprentice navigator Haunani Kane brings us today’s navigation update as crew members make their way to Rapa Nui. The crew has raised the crab-claw sails and is planning to make their turn west later tonight. The crew will then search for Isla Salas y Gómez and later Rapa Nui.

Haunani reports today that Hōkūleʻa has made it 23 degrees south, demarcated by the star Nahiku appearing five and a half degrees above the horizon. Hōkūleʻa Update | February 21, 2017: Haunani’s Morning Update

A good morning to apprentice navigator Haunani Kane who brings us our Tuesday morning update from the decks of Hōkūleʻa. She reports that after losing wind the evening before, the crew decided to tow behind escort vessel Gershon II and continue non-instrument navigation by communicating direction changes to the escort.
