Nikki Kamalu, born in Washington, but raised in the Hawaiian Islands (Oahu and Kauai), is taking her first long voyage with Hikianalia.
Hōkūleʻa represents to her, an important model of the Hawaiian cultural heritage. She feels Hōkūleʻa allows her the opportunity to see the world uniquely through the eyes of her kupuna on voyaging canoes.
While sailing, Nikki would like to see everyone acting on their kuleana in protecting and nurturing their ahupuaʻa which consists of land, ocean, and heaven. She would also like to see the commitment toward sustainability grow around the world.
