Finn Gibson from Waldo County, Maine first sailed on Hōkūleʻa in April 2021 and will soon set sail on Hōkūleʻa’s latest voyage to the Doldrums in May 2021.

To Finn, Hōkūleʻa is emblematic of the voyaging spirit, which he understands to be about exploration and connection, both literally and figuratively. Although he is just a visitor to Hawaiʻi, and comes from a very different place he has always felt welcomed at the Polynesian Voyaging Society. Finn has learned so much in his short time in Hawaii and will always be grateful for everyone’s willingness to share their knowledge with him. Finn explains that on a grander scale, Hōkūleʻa reminds him of the interconnectedness of the Earth’s people and places, and of his duty as a citizen of the world. He would like voyaging to continue to educate people about the traditional Hawaiian ways of doing things, and to keep fostering those cultural exchanges that are so important for everyone to experience.

Finn has yet to be out at sea for an extended voyage but he would most likely miss being cozy on a comfy couch with a book. When on land, he will miss the feeling when Hōkūleʻa booms lower, and the red sails fly in the wind. It’s impossible to recreate anywhere else, it’s timeless and magical.
