Crew Profile: Dr. Darragh O’Carroll

PVS Member Since

HOMETOWN: Baltimore Ireland/ Kalama valley
PRIMARY DUTY: Medical Officer
OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES: Deckhand
WORLDWIDE VOYAGE LEGS SAILED: Leg 4: Hikianalia’s Voyage To California
To Darragh, Hokulea symbolizes the one-world one-health initiative set forth by the WHO (World Health Organization). One canoe has travelled and captivated the world; it has symbolized that this is our world to care for, and our world to trash if we continue to turn a blind eye. From increased rates of cholera and malaria, to longer and more severe heat waves, climate change is now starting to affect humanities health.

"I would like Hikianalia to continue to promote sustainability, and to continue to point a lens on our ever pressing fight against climate change."

After attending the University of Hawaii John A Burns School of Medicine, and then the Los Angeles County Medical Center to obtain his certification in Emergency Medicine, Darragh returned to the islands and has worked in emergency departments across Oahu, Molokai, and Kauai. He teaches resident physicians at the university of Hawaii, and not only volunteers with PVS, but has spent time at the busiest trauma center in Johannesburg, the Manua Islands, Tijuana, and the international Red Cross.
