Crew Profile: Kekaulike Mar

PVS Member Since

HOMETOWN: Papakolea, O'ahu
PRIMARY DUTY:
OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:
WORLDWIDE VOYAGE LEGS SAILED: 2016 Brazil
Kekaulike first sailed on Hōkūleʻa in 2001 on the Millenium Statewide Sail. Kekaulike sees Hōkūleʻa as the kui that pierced the veil of antiquity to rediscover a cultural practice. He believes the historical efforts of PVS have strung a lei with people, places, stories and cultures in Hawai'i and across the Pacific. He is humbled and honored to play a small part of the lei that will adorn the world. It is his hope that the Worldwide Voyage will be a platform on which the cultural values and principles of Hawai'i can be shared with and compared to others throughout the world. For him, learning about and finding commonality between seemingly disparate peoples is the first step to mutual understanding and necessary to build a solid foundation to Mālama Honua.

Whether on land or at sea, Kekaulike misses most his 'ohana - both those that he leaves behind when he heads out for a voyage and the voyagers he leaves behind when he returns to land.
