HOMETOWN: Kāneʻohe, O'ahu
PRIMARY DUTY:
OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:
WORLDWIDE VOYAGE LEGS SAILED: Leg 6: Waitangi to Auckland
Martina is a medical doctor who first sailed on Hōkūleʻa with a class of medical students in 2009, after which she began training as a crewmember and now serves a medical officer on the canoe. Hōkūleʻa is special to Martina because it symbolizes cultural renewal and is a source of pride for Native Hawaiians and their relatives in the Pacific. She is hopeful that the Worldwide Voyage reminds people of the incredible wisdom and science of the ancestors and inspires them to apply some of that wisdom today. As a physician, she strongly believes that we cannot have healthy populations without healthy 'āina (land).

Martina misses her family while sailing and is grateful to her husband for taking care of their two children. On the other hand, she looks forward to having a deeper connection with her ancestors at sea.
