Crew Profile: Stuart Coleman

PVS Member Since

HOMETOWN: Honolulu, O'ahu
PRIMARY DUTY:
OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:
WORLDWIDE VOYAGE LEGS SAILED: Leg 6: Waitangi to Auckland
Originally from Charleston, S.C., Stuart lives in Honolulu where he teaches writing and has many pieces published himself, including the book "Eddie Would Go" about Hōkūleʻa crewmember Eddie Aikau. While writing that book, Stuart had the opportunity to sail on Hōkūleʻa for the first time. For him, Hōkūleʻa is a powerful symbol of the Hawaiian Renaissance and the rebirth of indigenous culture that made waves across the Pacific.

Stuart is the Coordinator for the Hawai'i Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation, an environmental organization that aims to protect oceans, waves and beaches. Stuart believes that the Worldwide Voyage is an amazing opportunity to train a new generation of sailors, navigators, and future leaders about what it means to Mālama Honua.

While sailing, Stuart misses sleeping in his own bed most of all but he also appreciates the tranquility of being immersed in nature, returning to the natural rhythms of the sea and wind, sun and stars.
