Crew Profile: Sam ʻOhu Gon III

PVS Member Since

HOMETOWN: Nuʻuanu, Oʻahu
PRIMARY DUTY: Naturalist
OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:
WORLDWIDE VOYAGE LEGS SAILED: Leg 9: Auckland
Sam lives in Nuʻuanu and works at The Nature Conservancy in Honolulu. He first had the honor of sailing on Hōkūleʻa in 1991, sailing from Hanakanaiʻa, Kahoʻolawe to Oʻahu via Maʻalaea. To Sam, Hōkūleʻa represents the revival and the growth of Hawaiian values and skills, the seed of the Hawaiian Renaissance, and a symbol of hope for healing of Hawaiʻi and the world. He hopes that the Worldwide Voyage will help spread messages of hope and care for our places, no matter where we live.

While out at sea, Sam most misses sitting quietly next to a clear, running Hawaiian stream. While back on land, he misses the pure views of the world from horizon to horizon, both day and night, with people who love and appreciate all that goes with the privilege of voyaging.
