Max Yarawamai has been sailing with the Polynesian Voyaging Society since 1995. Born on Ulithi Atoll in Yap, Micronesia, Max moved to Hawai'i when he was 13 years old. He developed a successful landscaping business and co-founded a non-profit called Oceania Community Health, which looks to serve and empower the peoples of Micronesia by addressing, with the community, its health needs.

At sea, Max has impeccable eyesight and it often able to spot objects on the horizon far before his fellow crewmembers. Max got his daughter, Ana, interested in sailing and she is now a Hōkūleʻa crewmember as well, sailing on multiple legs of the Worldwide Voyage.

While sailing, Max misses his 'ohana, and once back on land Max misses the teamwork he and his crewmates shared aboard Hōkūleʻa. Max is proud of the accomplishments that Hōkūleʻa and her 'ohana have had over the journey of the Worldwide Voyage so far.
