Dr. Eric Conklin is the Nature Conservancy's Hawaiʻi Marine Science Director. Eric was born in Cincinnati, OH, grew up in Rockford, IL, and now lives in Kaʻaʻawa, Oʻahu. He first time sailing with PVS was to Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument on Hikianalia in July 2015.

Eric has always been a big fan of the idea that the answers to the problems of today can be found in the experiences and approaches of those who came before us. For him, Hōkūleʻa embodies that spirit of honoring and learning from the past to help build a better future.

While sailing, Eric misses friends and loved ones most, followed distantly by a comfortable bed. While back on land, he missed the perspective of an open horizon to remind you that there's a bigger world out there that's all connected by one vast ocean.
