In 2007, she sailed on her first oceanic voyage, Ku Holo Mau, to sail the wa'a kaulua Alingano Maisu to Micronesia in order to gift it to Pwo Master Navigator Mau Piailug. She is a Hawaiian cultural resource teacher at the Hawaiian immersion charter school Kanu o ka ʻAina.
While at sea, Keala appreciates reconnecting with crewmembers from past voyages and hopes to make lasting connections to perpetuate the values and lessons of voyaging. Back on land, Keala loves to go swimming with her three grandchildren at the Coral Flats in Kawaihae.
