Henani is a high school math, science and navigation teacher at Ke Kula ‘O Nāwahīokalani‘ōpu‘u, a Hawaiian language immersion school in Keaʻau, Puna, as well as a lecturer at UH Hilo in for the Ka Haka ʻUla O Keʻelikōlani Hawaiian Language College. To him, Hōkūleʻa means history, revival, leadership and life. He would like to see an increased unity between all sailors of Hawai'i and a renewed pride in Hawaiian culture and heritage. On the Worldwide Voyage, he hopes that Hōkūleʻa inspires better management of the earth's resources and unity among people and all nations.
At sea, Henani's responsibility is conducting the science testing, including measuring aspects of fish caught, collecting water samples and documenting plankton and marine debris.
