Ben first got involved with the Polynesian Voyaging Society while taking a Ho'okele class on celestial navigation in college. Before that, he had assisted his grandfather, a long time PVS volunteer, in making hoe (sweeps) for the canoe. Ben got re-involved in PVS while working on Hōkūleʻa in dry dock after her Statewide Sail in 2013. Ben looks forward to interacting with other cultures while sailing on the Worldwide Voyage.
While on land, Ben is a Marine Machinery Mechanic who enjoys surfing, woodworking and creating art. He also volunteers with the PVS crewmember training program instructing entry level crewmembers.
