Joey first sailed on Hōkūleʻa in the early 1990's. To him, Hōkūleʻa is a powerful cultural symbol to the Hawaiian people which allows Hawaiians to touch, live and learn in the same footsteps as their ancestors. PVS is a powerful role model for other indigenous peoples around the Pacific. He hopes that the Worldwide Voyage creates ties and networks of like-minded people across the world to open our eyes to the health of our planet.
While out at sea, Joey misses his family. Back on land, he misses the sense of escapism in having no phones and no work responsibilities.
