Born on the North Shore of Oʻahu, Puaita was raised in Tahiti in Mataiea and now lives on Maui. For Puaita, Hōkūleʻa represents an 'old school' way of living that resonates with him. He hopes that the Worldwide Voyage can convince people across the world to mālama (take care of) themselves and their surroundings.
While out at sea, Puaita misses steak, ice cold drinks and electricity. Back on land, he misses the fresh clean air, the crew and the wa'a (canoe) and the moana (ocean).
