Kalau was raised in Laupahoehoe, Hawaiʻi and Niu Valley, Oʻahu. He became involved with PVS in the 70's. To Kalau, Hōkūleʻa means going back and finding Hawaiian history and learning how his ancestors traveled to new land. Through the Worldwide Voyage, he hopes to see cultural sharing of sustainability. While sailing, what he craves most is a good breakfast. When back on land, he misses everyone working together at sea.
