For Kalama, Hōkūleʻa is the meeting of science, culture, spirituality, gritty reality, toughness, kindness and laulima. It's an intersection of a beautiful past that some have tried to deny, a present full of hope, and a future full of possibility. Kalama hopes that, through the Worldwide Voyage, Hōkūleʻa can bring together indigenous people to share their knowledge and experience of living in balance with nature.
While sailing, Kalama misses fresh vegetable and kalo. While back on land, she misses the clarity of operations on the canoe - seek your destination, malama the wa'a, kokua your crew - in contrast to the grey and often confusing operations of modern life.
