Malia first sailed on Hōkūleʻa in 2009, on a coastal crew member training sail. She sees Hōkūleʻa as a cultural legacy for all to connect with in their personal journeys. She hopes that through the Worldwide Voyage, Hōkūleʻa can bring awareness to the importance of our individual and collective roles in being pono (righteous) in our stewardship of our communities and natural resources.
While out at sea, Malia misses ice water, freshwater showers, and talking with her mom. While back on land, she misses many things about being at sea including the simple routine, her fellow crewmembers, the natural elements, and the opportunities for personal reflection.
