Celeste is an Education and Outreach Coordinator at the 'Imiloa Astronomy Center of Hawai'i. She began as an intern at 'Imiloa in 2007, when Pwo Master Navigator Kālepa Baybayan first showed her the night sky from the perspective of a Polynesian navigator. She began studying navigation under Kālepa for many years which prepared he to serve as an apprentice navigator on Hōkūleʻa from the Cook Islands to Samoa, where her family is from. The voyage fulfilled a wish of her grandfathers that she would one day return to Samoa in the way of her ancestors "by way of the sea and the stars." With her education in culture and astronomy she hopes to promote place-based teaching of science through a cultural perspective.
