Craig was born in Michigan and grew up in Hawaiʻi from age 3 in Kapaʻa, Kauaʻi and later Kailua, Oʻahu. He grew up learning to value Hawaiʻi's unique ecosystem and care for hurt animals. He now lives in Hauʻula, Oʻahu where he is a wood artist and home repair specialist.
Craig first sailed on Hōkūleʻa in April 2010. On his second sail, he can remember doing the Hōkūleʻa Hula alone on the deck with light sea spray pelting his face as the canoe soared in 18 knot wind and visions of voyagers - both Polynesian and Viking - came to him and he was hooked!
To Craig, Hōkūleʻa is a great cultural bridge to bring people together. Like a needle of life stitching together humanity, she enables people across the world to share with each other messages of mālama honua.
