Dr. Carolyn Annerud grew up in Juneau, Alaska, where she dreamed of being a flying doctor in remote areas. She fulfilled those dreams, spending 12 years overseas as a doctor in such places as Papua New Guinea, Australia and the Antarctic. When she first encountered Hōkūleʻa off her home in Makaha, O‘ahu, she swam out to the canoe and dreamt of one day sailing on her. After sailing some in 2013 and 2014, she was honored to join the crew of Hōkūleʻa to sail to South Africa.
Carolyn sails for her ancestors and her grandchildren in the hopes that they will remember the stories of the remarkable voyage and challenge themselves to to test their limits in the world and the oceans. She sails to "care for the sea, and to love and to live on the Earth and in the clean clear salt water."
