Hye Jung was born in South Korea and grew up in Mount Dora, Florida before moving to Hawaiʻi to get a Master in Mathematics at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa before teaching Math at the University Laboratory School and Kapiolani Community College. Hye Jung currently teaches at ʻIolani School. Her first sail on Hōkūleʻa was from Brisbane to Darwin, Australia, in 2015.
Hōkūleʻa inspires Hye Jung to be more mindful in all aspects of her life and she hopes to inspire her students to do the same. She would love to see the world become more mindful of the impacts that we are having on our Island Earth. Through the Worldwide Voyage, she has already witnessed several schools come together to collaborate and she hopes to see more of that throughout the voyage.
