Ian first became involved with PVS on training sails on Hōkūleʻa out of Keauhou in 2000. For Ian, Hōkūleʻa inspires kanaka (people) to embrace their culture and not be afraid of challenging themselves to be better people. Through the Worldwide Voyage, he hopes to see the next generation of cultural practitioners, voyagers, and leaders get on the wa'a (canoe) and perpetuate Polynesian culture.
Ian loves spending time with his family - surfing with his sons at Honoliʻi and Kohanaiki, camping, hunting and fishing, running and hanging out with his wife. When he is at sea, he misses his family (and sometimes fried chicken) but he feels a deeper sense of connection to and a heightened sense of awareness of the environment. Back on land, when he needs to refocus, he thinks about being at sea on the canoe and it helps to settle his mind.
