Kala first sailed on Hōkūleʻa in 2006 on an inter-island sail from Honolulu to Kawaihae. Kala sees Hōkūleʻa as the mother of modern wa'a (canoes) and he hopes that through the Worldwide Voyage, she will represent Hawaiian people and culture in ports around the world. While at sea, Kala misses shade, fresh fruit, and ice cream, among other cold items. While back on land, Kala misses nearly everything about sailing from steering the canoe by reading the swell and feeling the vibrations of water rushing between the hulls to watching sunrises and sunsets with his crew.
