Karen was born in New Orleans but mostly grew up in England and France. She first stepped foot on Hōkūleʻa while studying the Hawaiian monk seal on Laysan Island in Papahānaumokuākea. To her, Hōkūleʻa represents peace, hope and the sacred merging of ancestry and future generations. She hopes that the Worldwide Voyage becomes a catalyst for change, awakening people to the magnificence of our home and the potential we have as a united whole to care for her.
When at sea, Karen most missed the feeling of being grounded into the earth, feeling her hands in the soil and harvesting organic greens straight from the land. Back on land, she misses being at sea, immersed in the elements the movement of the ocean, the vibrancy and multitude of the stars and the unique forging of family amongst crew.
