OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:
Hōkūleʻa to me represents ancient technology and modern engineering, remembering old ways and forging new ones. She demonstrates how we can learn to live with others and our environment. I would like to see the Mālama Honua Worldwide voyage ignite conversations, promote action, and celebrate the accomplishments of nations, communities, families and individuals who believe in caring for our Island Earth.
Whenever I am about to depart for a voyage, I begin to feel a humility that reflects a deep respect for the ocean and the navigators who have traversed its seas for hundreds of years before me. I feel that I could always study more, but understand that learning is an endless endeavor, making us students for as long as we live.
I was born in New York and raised in Hawaiʻi. I attended Ke Kula Kaiapuni ʻo Puʻohala, where I spoke Hawaiian and learned about my Hawaiian culture daily. It was then that I first saw Hōkūleʻa on a school field trip. I went on to attend the Kamehameha Schools where I studied in preparation for what I knew would be a STEM degree in college. I have attended BYU-Provo, Windward Community College, and the University of Hawaiʻi at Manoa, there graduating with a BS in Mechanical Engineering. I have had the honor of working with and volunteering at the Polynesian Voyaging Society since 2009 and have been
rewarded immeasurably for it.
