Maleko is a member of Nā Kelamoku Youth Leadership Initiative and a student at the Honolulu Community College Marine Education Training Center. For him, Hōkūleʻa is a symbol of pride for Hawaiʻi. Through the Worldwide Voyage, Maleko hopes to see positive change for our future.
He first sailed on Hōkūleʻa on a training sail in 2013. Maleko was an outrigger canoe paddler before he learned to sail so he was familiar with being on the water and even channel crossings but to be able to sail and travel the same way his ancestors did is an honor for him and he is grateful for the opportunity. While on land, Maleko craves to be out at sea - he craves the cool breeze as he sails and the awesome people he gets to sail with.
