Makana first sailed on Hōkūleʻa in 2008 and to him, Hōkūleʻa shows that Hawaiian culture and traditions are alive, strong, and relevant in present times.
While out at sea, what he craves the most would have to be his dog's company back at home. While on land, what he misses the most is being surrounded by ocean on every horizon and the feeling of being out there with a mission to accomplish.
