Mary Anna grew up on a cotton farm in New Mexico and has found a lot of similarities between voyaging and farming - both require you to respect nature and rely on and take care of each other. Mary Anna became involved with Hōkūleʻa and PVS in 2004 during the Navigating Change Voyage, teaching the curriculum to her middle school students. Mary Anna is an A'o Hawaii Teacher and she serves as an educational specialist on the canoe. To Mary Anna, Hōkūleʻa is "church" in its truest form - wherein people of all ages and experiences come are together challenged to learn the best in them and give unselfishly to their community.
